Godparenthood for Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee
Author: Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee
Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee is an Iranian writer, human rights activist and political prisoner, born in Iran in 1980. She has been campaigning for many years against the death penalty, for women’s rights and for freedom of expression. She gained international attention after Iranian security forces searched her home in 2014 and found an unpublished literary story amongst her private notes, in which she critically examined stoning as a punishment in Iran. Although the text had never been published, a branch of the Revolutionary Court sentenced her in 2016 to six years’ imprisonment for “insulting Islamic sanctities” and “propaganda against the state”. She was subsequently imprisoned in Evin Prison.

Her case attracted international attention, particularly after she went on a prolonged hunger strike in prison in 2016 to protest against what she considered to be an unfair trial and her treatment by the authorities. After several years in detention, she was temporarily released but remained under surveillance by the authorities. Amid increasing repression against activists, she was re-arrested in 2022 and returned to Evin Prison. In subsequent trials before the Revolutionary Court, she received further prison sentences for alleged “propaganda against the state” and other political charges. Human rights organisations regard her as a political prisoner and criticise the fact that her convictions are based primarily on the peaceful expression of her views and her literary work. The city of Osnabrück has taken on a sponsorship for Golrokh Iraee.
