The Donnersberg Literature Days (DLT)

The (DLT) are under the patronage of the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Culture and are largely financed by donations and public funds, which are channelled into project and programme work.

The concept
Their concept is based on three pillars. The following are invited to readings:

  • Upper secondary school pupils (or those who have completed their intermediate school leaving certificate) who have taken part in the Rhineland-Palatinate-wide writing competition for the Susanne Faschon Prize.

  • Nationally renowned authors (including one bilingual author)

  • authors from the region (including a dialect poet)

In addition, there is a poetry slam, exhibitions, events for children and often workshops.

The DLT also participates in the Kirchheimbolander Peace Days with contributions, as well as commemorating the book burnings of 1933.

History
The DLT began in 2007 with the participation of pupils from all eligible schools in the Donnersberg district. Since 2017, they have included all pupils who have completed their secondary education in the Palatinate, since 2019 also in Rheinhessen, and from 2021 throughout Rhineland-Palatinate. The DLT takes place every two years.

The readings were initially limited to one week, but now cover the period from May to October. Visitor numbers have risen steadily, reaching over 1,300 visitors for 13 events in 2017.

In addition to the Susanne Faschon Prize, a "Prize for the Most Creative School in Writing" has also been awarded since 2015. Since 2015, it has honoured the commitment of teachers.

Milestones
Thanks to its concept, the Donnersberg Literature Days are now probably the most diverse literature festival in Rhineland-Palatinate and can also hold its own in a national comparison. In terms of content, all literary genres are represented, from science fiction/fantasy to poetry.
